I FINALLY made it to Savannah, GA and I can’t wait to share my entire long weekend with you including our exact Savannah itinerary, how to get around, where to stay plus more restaurant, bar and food recommendations that we didn’t get a chance to check out!
Savannah, Georgia is a charming, coastal Southern city separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. It’s known for its manicured parks, cobblestone squares and parks, Spanish moss-covered trees and also antebellum architecture.
Savannah is one of the top-ranked travel destinations in the country, is VERY popular amount tourists (especially ones looking to escape the cold winter) and is consistently named one of the “friendliest cities” by Condé Nast Traveler readers.
A 3 day trip to Savannah is the perfect amount of time to explore all of its beauty and charm! But honestly there’s so much to do and see in Savannah that you could easily spend a week taking it all of the alluring landscapes, stunning architecture and intriguing history AND of course eating at all it’s amazing restaurants! PLUS during the warmer months you can hop over to Tybee Island or Hilton Head for an afternoon, day or few days at the beach.
Savannah truly has something to offer to every kind of traveler and after reading through this 3 day itinerary of Savannah, GA and watching my daily vlogs (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3) I guarantee you’ll be planning your trip!
3 Day Itinerary – Savannah, GA
Day 1
We left JFK at 7am and flew into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Then after a short Lyft ride from the airport, we arrived at the Perry Lane Hotel (check out the hotel section of this post below for more details.) It was still early so we couldn’t check in yet, but we were able to drop off our bags and head out for brunch.
We walked over to The Collins Quarter, their Downtown Savannah location was only 2 blocks away from our hotel, put our names down on the waiting list and grabbed coffee-to-go while we walked around. There’s pretty much always a wait here, but believe me it’s WORTH THE WAIT! Order a latte, a CQ Bloody Mary, the CQ Biscuits & Gravy and the Swine Time Beni.
After brunch we were able to check into The Perry Lane (much earlier than anticipated) and were greeted with bottle water and champagne (which is available at all times in the lobby. We quickly changed and then headed out to do a little exploring.
We walked past the The Olde Pink House, one of Savannah’s most popular restaurants located in the Planters Inn.
But we weren’t able to get a reservation here. And honestly heard mixed reviews about if it was worth the hype. But I say if you are happy to get a reservation take it because it is considered one of Savannah’s greatest and most classic restaurants.
We wandered past Savannah’s Rainbow Row (which is much smaller than Charleston‘s) and down to River Street hoping to grab a drink at Myrtle & Rose, a Rooftop Garden at the JW Marriott Savannah in the Plant Riverside District, but it was closed for a private event. Instead we ended up at the Electric Moon Skytop Lounge and stayed there literally the entire afternoon! It was super chill, plenty of places to sit and the drinks were pretty inexpensive. In fact, Savannah has a LOT of rooftop bars and this was definitely one of the most fun.
After changing at the hotel we walked to our dinner reservation at Cotton & Rye. This New American gastropub was about a 30 minute walk from our hotel in the Thomas Square neighborhood of Savannah, but definitely worth the walk. Order the Award Winning Crispy Chicken Wings, Buttermilk Rye Cornbread, Tossed Salad, Pork Osso Buco & Mac and Cheese!
Day 2
We grabbed complimentary coffee at our hotel (a serious perk!) and headed over to Oglethorpe Square for our architecture tour with Architectural Savannah and tour guide, Jonathan Stalcup, a SCAD graduate. Their daily, standard 90-minute tour is presented as a narrative timeline starting with the oldest building in Savannah. And then going through the major period and style changes to end in present day! He’ll take you past many of Savannah’s most important historic homes and historical sites like the Bernard Hammond House, The Kehoe House, The Owens Thomas House and much more!
I always love to do at least 1 tour in every new city that I visit and this one came highly recommended and didn’t disappoint! If architecture isn’t your thing I suggest a historic walking tour, SCAD Museum of Art or a ghost tour (my personal fav).
We put our name on the wait list at the Little Duck Diner and explored the nearby City Market while we waited. City Market is an open air market with shopping, dining and artwork and while it isn’t that exciting, if you’re looking to kill time or for a souvenir it’s perfect!
The wait at the Little Duck Diner on a Sunday afternoon was LONG, but it was worth it and the food came out SUPER fast once we were seated!
Order a Bellini (because you didn’t go to the Little Duck Diner without getting a drink with a little rubber duck in it), the Crab Risotto Balls and the Maxwell Sandwich!
After brunch we made our way towards Forsyth Park, Savannah’s largest and oldest public park. On the way we also made sure to walk past Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, the Mercer Williams House, the Armstrong House and the First Girl Scouts Headquarters.
But the only place we didn’t get a chance to check out was the Bonaventure Cemetery, located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River just east of Savannah. It became famous when it was featured in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. And also has become a popular tourist destination. It’s free to walk around the cemetery, but they also offer guided tours.
After exploring the park at it’s bordering streets we headed back to the hotel to grab a complimentary drink at the Wayward Bar. Then we headed up to the Peregrin Rooftop Bar, also in our hotel, to catch the sunset and grab a drink before dinner! Order the Moroccan Sandstorm!! As far as rooftops go this was definitely chicer and more upscale than the Electric Moon, but just as fun!
After drinks we walked down to Vic’s on the River for dinner. The concierge at our hotel told us that Vic’s and the Olde Pink House have very similar menus and that she’s rather go to Vic’s over the Olde Pink House any day! Order the Pecan Fried Flounder and the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes.
Day 3
Before checking out we headed downstairs for breakfast at The Emporium Kitchen & Wine Market. Order the Eggs Benedict with grits and Pain Perdu! Then had the hotel hold our bags while we did a few final hours of exploring!
A few streets to make sure you take a walk down while you’re visiting are Gaston St. and Jones St. They’re both filled with some of the most beautiful homes in the city.
Then we FINALLY got to try Leopold’s Ice Cream! This is a MUST-DO while visiting Savannah and it didn’t disappoint. AND they also had VEGAN ICE CREAM which was amazing.
We probably could’ve scheduled another tour today, but instead we just wandered down to River Street again to check out one last rooftop, Rocks on the Roof. It was a Monday afternoon so it wasn’t very busy, but it seems like another great rooftop bar. Order one of their local beers on tap, I got the Coastal Empire Southern Delight Praline Amber and it was amazing!
While we were on our way to an early dinner we walked past Mint to be Mojito Bar, a HIGHLY recommended bar, and couldn’t resist grabbing a mojito to go (remember Savannah has an open container policy) and we were NOT DISAPPOINTED!!
Our one last stop was Happy Hour at Husk!
We didn’t have a reservation, but if you show up around 10 minutes before they open at 5pm you’re very likely to get a seat at the (insanely beautiful) bar or even a table! In fact, we were the first ones there. And by the time 5pm rolled around there were about 20 people waiting outside with us. We got prime spots at the bar and ordered wine and food from their special Happy Hour menu – Chef’s choice oysters, Smoked Trout Mousse with Everything Crackers and HUSK Hot Fried Chicken.
Everything was beyond amazing probably the best meal we had, and we kinda regretted not making a reservation and having a full meal here (the only reason we didn’t is because we just went to HUSK in Charleston, but the menus are completely different). There’s always next time, but this place is not to be missed. And if you have one meal in Savannah have it be at HUSK.
After dinner we headed to the airport to catch our 8pm flight back to NY! I love that they offer a late flight to JFK because we truly got a full 3 day itinerary in Savannah, GA without having to pay for 3 nights in a hotel.
How to Get Around Savannah GA
Walk
Walking is the easiest and best way to get around this pedestrian friendly city! You’re more than likely going to spend a majority of your trip, if not your entire trip. Exploring the historic district which is just about 3 miles large and exploring the city at our leisure this way made the more sense!
Also Savannah is FILLED with the most charming squares, streets, shops and restaurants and the best way to see them all is to wander. And remember, Savannah has an Open Container Policy so you can grab a drink at one of Savannah’s MANY bars and get lost in the streets of this charming city!
Also worth noting, Savannah is relatively flat so you don’t have to worry about climbing any hills. The only area that you’ll encounter a change in elevation is by the Riverfront where you’ll have to descend a steep set of stairs or driveway to get to River St.
I also never felt unsafe walking around the historical district during the day or night during our trip!
Trolley
Old Town Trolley Tours has provided sightseeing tours while the conductors narrate highlighting the best attractions in Savannah for over 30 years! And Old Savannah Tours brings Savannah’s history to life with their uniquely personal descriptions of Savannah’s history and historical re-enactors!
Not only are these a great way to get around the city (especially if you’re visiting Savannah during the summer), but you’ll learn something too! Both companies offer an unlimited Hop On/Off option with frequent and convenient stops around the city.
Uber/Lyft
Of course ride-sharing apps and traditional taxis are always an option to get around Savannah! The only times we used Uber/Lyft was to and from the airport (which is about a 20-minute drive) and then back to the hotel from dinner one night because it was late and we were tired.
Also worth noting, some hotels offer a complimentary car service to drive/pick you up from destinations within a certain distance from the hotel.
Bike
I’m NOT a bike rider, but if you are then biking is a great way to see the city! Many hotels offer free bike rentals during your stay, but also Savannah is the first city in Georgia to offer a bicycle-sharing program that allows you to rent bikes stationed all over the city!
