I’m not going to lie…I’m quite the winter coat connoisseur. But I guess that’s what happens when you grow up in a cold climate, your outerwear is just as important as your outfit itself, because depending on what you’re doing, your coat may never actually come off! I’d say for about 10 years it was tradition for my mom to buy me a new coat for my birthday (in October) just in time for the temperature to take a dip, so I’ve acquired quite the collection.
And while I’ve cleaned out my coat closet a bunch of times, I’ve never actually thrown any of my pieces away because they’re not in style anymore, the only time I’ve actually gotten rid of a coat is because it’s either worn out or it doesn’t fit! While I LOVE my trendy clothing items, in my mind coats are investment pieces and since I tend to spend a little more money on them than most other things I buy, I’m all about purchasing quality, classic winter coats!
SO today I’m rounding up the 10 Classic Winter Coats You’ll Never Regret Buying! And I can guarantee that no matter if you’re reading this post in 2018 (when I first published it) or 2022 (when I first updated it) or 2030, you’ll find just the inspiration you need to shop for the perfect winter coat for you! From wrap coats to faux fur to down parkas these 10 are classic winter coats that will never go out of style!
10 Classic Winter Coats You’ll Never Regret Buying
1. Long Camel Coat
This long camel coat is my newest piece and exactly what my coat collection was missing! I got rid of my old camel coat when I moved (you can see it here & here), because it had a stain on it I couldn’t get out and while I wasn’t planning on replacing it right away when I saw this one on sale I knew I had to get it! It was my ONLY Black Friday clothing purchase and I couldn’t be happier with it!
I think a long camel coat is the ULTIMATE classic winter coat and in my mind, everyone (women & men) should have one in their closet.
2. Water Resistant Puffer Jackets
When rounding up my picks for winter coats for women there’s no way I couldn’t include a puffer jacket! Down coats are the warmest winter coats and #2 on my list of coats you’ll never regret buying! Personally, I need a puffer coat that covers my butt, but there are also really cute waist-length options (like this North Face one) and many more length styles available.
If you live in a warmer place, but aren’t still looking for a puffer jacket try a puffer vest instead! I’m really into the longer-length ones that are popular this year.
3. Faux Fur
I’m SUCH a sucker for a faux fur jacket! First off they’re SO warm and are such a statement maker! In the cold weather our outfits are pretty much irrelevant especially if you’re doing an outdoor activity so wearing a show-stopping coat like a faux fur is the equivalent of a killer outfit.
4. Teddy Coat
The teddy coat is a new favorite of mine, but since getting one I haven’t stopped wearing it. It’s cozy and looks good dressed up or dressed down and I love that it even fits over my thickest sweaters (a huge problem I have with some of my more tailored coats).
5. Plaid Coat
The plaid coat, another VERY classic winter coat that you’ll never regret buying. Majority of the plaid coats out right now are wool blend so they’ll keep you warm, but the variety of styles is ENDLESS!
I’m particularly loving plaid shackets this year (after it took me so long to hop of the trend), but if you’re looking for something a little more classic I took the below pastel tailored coat on a trip to Vermont a few years ago and I got so many compliments! You also can’t go wrong with a neutral black, white and gray plaid coat, it’s a great way to step up your normal style if you tend to gravitate towards neutrals.
6. Wrap Coat
Your body shape can often get lost behind a heavy winter coat, but a wrap coat is a perfect solution to that problem! I love that the tie cinches your waist while keeping you covered and warm!
7. Knee Length Casual Coat
Casual winter coats are a must! I always lean towards something knee-length, but still also tailored so it looks neat no matter what you’re wearing underneath. Another great casual coat would be a water repellant trench coat, which is chic and classic.
8. Wool Tailored Coat
Full-length wool coats are a must if you live anywhere in the North. They will be your best friend all winter long and MAKE an outfit in my opinion. If you’ve ever read one of my Winter Capsule Wardrobes then you know that I wear my wool-tailored coats over pretty much every outfit!
9. Animal Print Coat
Name a better print than animal print? Ok, I already mentioned plaid, but there are definitely 2 classic prints that you’ll never regret buying. Animal print is neutral in my mind and therefore the perfect print for a winter coat that will never go out of style.
10. Pop of Color Coat
And last, but definitely not least, a winter wardrobe isn’t complete without a pop of color coat! I particularly love a winter coat in color when spring is on the horizon, but the temperatures haven’t warmed up yet. A bright-colored coat is the cure for the winter blues.
If you love a pop of color coat as much as me, but can’t justify buying one – I highly recommend renting one!! I rented this pink double-breasted coat for an early Spring trip where I still needed to wear a winter coat and it definitely put a smile on my face.
And I’m sure you’re wondering how the hell I manage to own all these coats, well I don’t (but I wouldn’t regret buying any)! Like I mentioned above I do own quite the collection of classic winter coats, but I also rent a TON of them from nuuly too! And renting gives me the option to be able to try out trendier and bolder pieces without making a commitment to them! Renting a coat is also a great option if you live full time in a warmer climate and are going to visit a cold place! Rent some of my favorite coats from this post here:
As always you can sign up for nuuly and get $10 off your first month of rentals here! For more information about this clothing rental service check out my blog post where I break it all down for you.
