Don’t miss Tapping Reeve House and Law School right on South Street, the first law school in America, where Aaron Burr and many other notable figures studied. Like many other small New England towns, one of the best things to do in Litchfield, CT is to just wander around.

This 511-acre estate offers another glimpse into Litchfield County’s genteel past. The property centers on a charming English Tudor-style cottage that was the summer home of Edith Morton Chase, daughter of a wealthy industrialist. The Litchfield Hills grounds are open year-round for picnicking and exploring, with formal gardens and wildflower meadows that burst with color in summer. The house itself is open for tours on select dates, revealing a beautifully preserved 1920s interior. This is a truly a hidden gem, one of the best things to do in Litchfield, CT and not to be missed if you’re in the area.

Culture thrives in Litchfield, particularly through Litchfield Performing Arts organization, which brings world-class music to this small town. Their Litchfield Jazz Festival, held each summer, attracts top talent and jazz enthusiasts from around the region. Throughout the year, they also host classical music concerts, cabaret performances, and educational programs.
Walk through Mount Tom State Park
Mount Tom is one of the oldest parks in state of Connecticut park system and a great place to spend the day in Litchfield. Hike the short one mile tower trail that leads to a black gneiss tower and one of the best views in the state. You can see the highest peak in Massachusetts, the Catskills in New York and the Long Island Sound from the summit, in the fall its especially breathtaking. The park offers fishing, swimming and canoeing on the pond too.

The Village Restaurant
A Litchfield institution since 1979, The Village Restaurant serves elevated American cuisine in a cozy, unpretentious setting. While The Village may technically be in the best restaurants section of this post, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Litchfield, CT. The menu changes seasonally but consistently features fresh, locally sourced ingredients from local farmers prepared with skill and creativity. Locals and visitors alike will tell you it’s only of the best restaurants in the area. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for weekend dinners.
The West Street Grill
For a more upscale dining experience, The West Street Grill has been a culinary destination since 1990. Chef-owner James O’Shea creates sophisticated New American dishes that have earned the restaurant a loyal following. The grilled seafood and steaks are consistently excellent, and the seasonal preparations showcase the best of local farms. The restaurant’s warm, intimate atmosphere and professional service make it ideal for special occasions. The bar is also a great place for a pre-dinner cocktail.
Arethusa al tavolo
This farm-to-table restaurant is connected to the renowned Arethusa Farm and Dairy, so you know the ingredients are impeccably fresh. The restaurant prides itself on exclusively using Arethusa dairy products and for procuring only the finest products for it’s daily menu. Save room for dessert, because the ice cream made from Arethusa’s own dairy is some of the best you’ll ever taste.
You can also visit the Arethusa Farm Dairy scoop shop next to the restaurant for fresh waffle cones and their full line of dairy products including cheese, yogurt, ice cream, milk, butter, sour cream and their seasonal eggnog. Or Arethusa A Mano across the street for house made pastries, breakfast sandwiches and light lunch options.
Market Place Tavern
Located in the former Litchfield County Jail, Market Place Tavern is serving elevated American tavern fare alongside craft beers and cocktails featuring local spirits. The restaurant kept the iron barred windows and the authentic cell blocks frame the three story bar making this a truly unforgettable dining atmosphere. They. also have a large deck for outdoor seating.
Espresso 59
Espresso 59 is a cute coffee shop and bakery located right on the historic Litchfield Green in the former Murphy’s Pharmacy. They’re serving coffee, desserts and pastries including classic Italian favorites.
DiFrancos Restaurant
DiFrancos is a casual Italian restaurant with a large patio right in town serving traditional dishes, pasta, pizza, sandwiches and more local favorites.
Petraroia Deli
Petraroia Deli is great spot for delicious hot and cold sandwiches, grab-and-go salads and prepared foods including breakfast. It’s the perfect place to great lunch to bring on one of the adventures above.
@ the Corner
On the corner of West and South Streets, @ the Corner is a modern American Restaurant serving up inventive and flavorful dishes with an expansive craft beer list. They also have a sister restaurant around the corner called, At The Corner South Street that is a Taqueria & Cocktail Bar.
The Smithy Cafe at 9 Main
Ok this one technically isn’t in Litchfield, The Smithy Cafe is just down the road in New Preston, but the sandwiches here are SO good if you’re headed that way make sure to stop by for a bite.
Where to Stay in Litchfield
Belden House and Mews
Located steps from the busy village center, Belden House and Mews offers a convenient location for exploring downtown, but since it is set back around the corner you’d never know you were so close. This 19th century colonial revival mansion and 1950s mews have been reimagined into a 31 room hotel that has not only been awarded a Michelin Guide Key, but also has been named one of Travel + Leisure’s Best New Resorts in the US.
The main house is home to a gorgeous front porch, formal drawing room, dining room, private dining room/library and the coveted green bar. The 3 acre property also includes a 50-foot seasonal pool, lawn club, bathhouse with dry sauna, steam room and fitness center along with a Spa. Belden House & Mews offers breakfast, Sunday brunch, lunch and dinner in the house’s original dining room along with Afternoon Tea from Sunday through Thursday and Oysters & TIny Tinis every Monday to Thursday.
I stayed at Belden House and Mews in one of their Mews Grand Rooms and I can’t recommend it enough. The room was beautiful and I thoroughly took advantage of all the amenities including the restaurant, bathhouse and pool. I loved that from the moment I arrived for my weekend getaway I didn’t have move my car and was able to not only enjoy the hotel, but walk to everywhere.
The Litchfield Inn
Just 2 miles from the historic downtown, The Litchfield Inn is a colonial-style boutique hotel featuring 32 comfortable rooms and suites decorated with traditional New England charm. The hotel is set on 10 acres in the foothills of the Berkshires and strikes a nice balance between historic character and modern amenities, with comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, reliable WiFi and a newly opened Pool & Field House. Each stay includes a complimentary breakfast and all day coffee and refreshments. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about local attractions.
Lost Fox Inn
For a more intimate inn experience, Lost Fox Inn, formerly Tollgate Hill Inn, occupies a beautifully restored 1745 building just outside downtown Litchfield. All rooms were renovated to preserve the building’s original charm while introducing modern amenities. The on-site tavern and restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience and features local ingredients and seasonal menus.. The property’s grounds are lovely for strolling, and the location provides a peaceful retreat while still being close to town. All stays at the hotel include complimentary coffee and tea and a daily breakfast spread served in the tavern. Worth noting the hotel and restaurant are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Abner Hotel
Located steps from the historic town green, The Abner Hotel offers the most convenient location for exploring downtown. Once the historic Litchfield County Courthouse, this boutique hotel now features 20 guest rooms, The Courtroom restaurant and Verdict:, a seasonal rooftop bar. Each room is distinctly designed to blend history and modern sophistication and all stays include complimentary breakfast. The Courtroom, The Abner’s signature restaurant, was once the main historic courtroom and services modern tavern style dishes. The Parlor is an cocktail lounge perfect for grabbing a pre-dinner drink or if the weather is good the rooftop bar, Verdict:, is a beautiful place to grab a drink while enjoying panoramic views of the Litchfield countryside.
Winvian Farm
If you’re looking for a truly special and luxurious experience, Winvian Farm is unlike any place you’ve ever stayed. This ultra-exclusive resort features 18 individually themed cottages scattered across 113 acres. This is truly one of the most unique luxury hotels I’ve ever seen, each cottage is a masterpiece of creative design, from the Helicopter cottage (yes, you sleep in a real helicopter) to the Treehouse, the Library and the Music cottage. Best Time to Visit Litchfield
Fall (September-November)
Autumn is peak season in Litchfield and for good reason. The fall foliage is spectacular, with the surrounding hills ablaze in reds, oranges, and golds. The weather is perfect for hiking, the harvest season brings fresh cider and pumpkins and the town takes on an extra glow. Book accommodations well in advance for October weekends.
Summer (June-August)
Summer offers warm weather perfect for outdoor activities. Bantam Lake is the largest natural lake in Connecticut and is ideal for swimming, Sandy Beach is the main public beach to check out. The hiking trails are also in full swing and outdoor dining becomes a pleasure. The Litchfield Jazz Festival in July is a major draw. This is also a popular time for visitors, so expect company at major attractions.
Winter (December-February)
Winter transforms Litchfield into a snowy wonderland. The historic buildings look even more charming dusted with snow and the trails at White Memorial become cross-country skiing routes. The holiday season is particularly magical with festive decorations throughout town. This is the quietest tourist season, so you’ll often have attractions to yourself.
Spring (March-May)
Spring brings wildflowers, warming weather, and the awakening of the landscape. It’s a lovely time for hiking as the trails are less crowded than summer, and you can watch nature come back to life. Rates are often lower than peak season, making it a good value time to visit.

Kent Falls State Park
About 25 minutes north of Litchfield, Kent Falls is one of Connecticut’s most beautiful waterfalls. The 250-foot cascade is especially impressive in spring or after heavy rains. A relatively easy trail leads across a covered bridge and alongside the falls, offering multiple viewing points.
Lake Waramaug
This scenic lake about 20 minutes from Litchfield is a local favorite for water activities. Public access to the lake is available via Lake Waramaug State Park. The park offers swimming, fishing, picnicking, camping and a launch for car-top boating and canoeing. Lake Waramaug is especially popular in the fall, it’s one of the best places in the area to see and photograph fall foliage.
Sunset Meadow Vineyards
Located on Route 63 in Goshen, Sunset Meadow Vineyards is a sustainably farmed vineyard with over 170 acres. The tasting room offers samples of their estate-grown wines or you can purchase wine by the glass or bottle to enjoy on their scenic property. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs and blankets and outside food is allowed, but food trucks are also onsite most weekends and light snacks are available for purchase.
Woodbury Antiques District
Just 15 minutes south, Woodbury is known as the antiques capital of Connecticut. More than a dozen high-quality antique shops line Route 6, offering everything from fine American furniture to vintage jewelry and collectibles.
