What do you do on Christmas and what do you wear while you’re doing it?
I know everyone’s Christmas Eve & Day plans may look a little different, but I’m here to help no matter what your day (& night) look like, because the last thing you want is to be standing in front of your closet with “nothing to wear” on Christmas!
On Christmas Eve my family traditionally has a Christmas Eve party complete with a menu of seven fishes (an Italian tradition) among many many more dishes and I love to dress up for it. I usually break out my best festive party outfit – think red midi dresses, metallic pleated skirts, suede boots, red lipstick and more!
And my Christmas Day is pretty much the exact opposite of Christmas Eve. I spend the entire day lounging and relaxing and eating and drinking with my family in the MOST casual outfit ever! Some years I don’t even change out of my plaid Christmas pajamas and other years I wear leggings or joggers and a festive sweater. Whatever I wear on Christmas has to be conducive for lots of couch sitting!
Before deciding what to wear on Christmas Day you first need to figure out what you’re doing. But no matter how you choose to spend the day I’ve got you covered when it comes to outfit ideas! Dressed up, dressed down or anything in between I’ve got an idea (or 2) for you.
What to Wear on Christmas Day
Festive Loungewear:
If you’re like me on Christmas Day as like to be as comfortable as possible then I’ve got 4 outfit ideas for you including the one I’m most liking going to be sporting this upcoming holiday!
I think the key to wearing loungewear on a holiday is to make it festive – whether it be with a sparkly piece of jewelry, a luxe texture, a traditionally festive color or even a funny sweater.
Green, velvet joggers are a great option to wear on Christmas if you’re keeping it casual. They’re comfortable and festive, but it’s still also an elevated look. You can even pair this look with a heel if you wanted to kick it up a notch, just remember to pack your slippers in your bag!
Shop velvet pants:
And if you’re keeping it REAL casual, you can never go wrong with a pair of classic red plaid pajamas! It’s tradition in my family to get new pjs every year and we tend to stay in them as long as possible on Christmas morning so I’m all for Christmas outfit. Even better if you have a ugly Christmas sweater & fuzzy themed socks to pair with them.
Shop Christmas Pajamas:
And the look that you’ll probably catch me wearing this Christmas Day – leggings and a sweater with a red plaid coat, beanie and my new favorite booties!

Casual Christmas:
I wasn’t really sure what to call these outfits, but casual Christmas seemed appropriate – it’s not dressed down, but it’s not dressed up, it’s somewhere right in between. Think jeans, casual dresses, touches of festive elements – put together and chic.
Great fitting jeans, a red sweater and a classic camel coat is the perfect outfit for pretty much any Christmas related casual activity and a “casual Christmas” day is no exception! Pair it with sleek booties, a pom pom beanie and a red lip to complete your look!
Shop Red Sweaters:
Similar to above jeans, booties and a festive sweater is never a bad idea!
Shop Festive Sweaters:
If you want a step up from jeans I suggest going with a simple black dress paired with a suede jacket – bonus points if it’s green or another festive color – and an equally festive plaid scarf. This oversized one is a favorite and my go-to for the month of December.

Dressed Up:
And last, but not least – if you’re getting dressed up for Christmas I’ve got you covered with a few easy outfit ideas! Like I mentioned earlier, I don’t really get dressed up for Christmas Day, but I do for Christmas Eve and these are some of the outfits I’ve worn of Christmas Eves past!
I know black isn’t necessarily a “festive” option for the holidays, but when paired with metallics like gold and silver it instantly elevates it. Accessorizing a plainer dress is a great way to get more wears out of something that’s already in your closet – I suggest looking for a fun belt, hair clips and of course lipstick!
Shop Little Black Dresses:
Of course I couldn’t have a post about “what to wear on Christmas Day” without a twirl worthy red dress! Skater style dresses are perfect for occasions where you want to be comfortable, but also need to dress up and they look great on all body types. I of course couldn’t resist adding a few extra festive touches like silver heels and rhinestone star earrings to complete the look.
Shop Red Dresses:
Not into red and green? Layer on your metallics then – I think rose gold, bronze and silver are just as festive as your more traditional Christmas colors!
I don’t know why everyone always defaults to wearing red over green during the holidays, but I’m here to remind you not to forget about it! And don’t be afraid to have fun with it (no matter what color you choose) – break out those leopard heels!
Shop Green Dresses:
Going all out for Christmas Day? Go for the red tulle! For me it pays homage to The Nutcracker and it’s just SO pretty I can’t help but smile while wearing it. Keep your accessories minimal so the dress really shines!
