Last summer I published my first Capsule Wardrobe blog post and haven’t looked back since! Every season for the year and a half I’ve put together an affordable capsule wardrobe to help you guys not only shop for the season, but also inspire you to get creative with what you may already have in your closet and pair together items you might not have thought to wear together.
It’s so easy to get caught up in new trends and buying “all the things” especially if you follow a lot of influencers on social media, but really adding a just a few new items to your closet each season and slowly building your ideal wardrobe (that you’re actually excited to wear) is what you should concentrate on!
That being said my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe consists of 26 items I think you should have in your closet, many of which you may already have, and why I think each of them is important, then I’m giving you 48 outfit ideas for how to pair these items together so hopefully you’re never stuck standing in front of your closet with “nothing to wear”!
We’re well into October and the temperatures are finally starting to drop a little bit in New York so it’s the perfect time to access your closet to see what you already have and what you’re lacking!
H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe Items:
1. Short Tie Belt Dress ($49.99)
A shorter, flirty dress is a must during Fall for me. This subtle polka dot print is a fun alternative to basic black and the tie belt can easily be swapped out for something else. Wear it with tights and boots on colder days, sneakers for a casual look, bare legs and flats when it’s warmer, the outfit combination possibilities are endless!
2. Printed Midi Pencil Skirt ($24.99)
I’m OBSESSED with this skirt! The colors of the flowers, the sage green background, the slit. Literally everything! Dress it up with knee high boots or ankle booties, dress it down with sneakers. There are SO many possibilities with this skirt and it will transition well into Spring & Summer!
3. Ankle Length Satin Skirt ($29.99)
This ankle length skirt is so dreamy and such a fun addition to this Fall Capsule Wardrobe. I find it extremely versatile and once again will be so easy to transition into other season.
4. Plaid Poncho ($29.99)
I don’t know who wouldn’t like the idea of essentially wearing a blanket around, so this should be the item you’re most excited about in this capsule wardrobe! You can wear this around the house or out with pretty much anything for a classic Fall look.
5. Wool Coat ($199.99)
Depending on where you live Fall may or may not be “coat”, but in NY it definitely is. I’m partial to a longer length coat in a neutral (but not too neutral) color, and this olive one was calling my name. It’s is on the pricier side, but I believe a coat is an investment, if you’re looking for something a little less expensive check out this, this and this!
6. Printed Chiffon Blouse ($29.99)
A pretty blouse is a must for any season’s capsule wardrobe. I love adding a print into the mix with a blouse because it’s perfect for work or play.
7. Striped Sweater ($12.99)
This cozy Striped Sweater is so fun, but just as versatile as a solid color sweater. I love the thick stripes and that it’s a neutral.
8. Off The Shoulder Sweater ($19.99)
It’s not fall without a classic warm toned sweater. This off the should style oozes sophistication, but also is slightly sexy. Also available in a darker beige and black.
9. Long Sleeve Top ($9.99)
A black long sleeve is essential in everyone’s Fall wardrobe (kids, adults, guys, girls, everyone!). It pairs perfect with sweats and jeans, but also works with a skirt for a more dressed up look. H&M’s basics are great for layering too, so if it gets really cold or you’re doing an outdoor activity you can layer this under a sweater for a non-bulky warm look.
10. Oversized Long Cardigan ($19.99)
Sweater weather calls for a variety of sweaters in your closet and a long cardigan is a staple! You can wear this with jeans, loungewear, dresses…pretty much anything! I always like to keep a long cardigan at my desk at work during the Fall & Winter months so that if I get cold I can throw it on and still look put together. This dark beige color is super versatile, but this sweater also comes in light gray, dark gray and black!
11. Black Joggers ($17.99)
Loungewear isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and as the cold weather approaches I’m sure you’re going to be spending a lot more time indoors with comfy clothes on. Well no one said your comfy clothes couldn’t be cute! Black joggers are the perfect thing to wear around the house, but also can be worn out with sneakers or boots and a sweater!
12. Dress Pants ($34.99)
I’m sure you’re confused as to why I put a pair of pink dress pants in my Fall Capsule Wardrobe, but honestly I just couldn’t stand to add another dark piece of clothing. This powder pink is a neutral in my mind and works so well with pretty much every other color and with black and white.
13. Straight High Ankle Jeans ($29.99)
Straight leg jeans are a MUST for Fall (and every other season). They’re comfortable and relaxed, but also look incredibly chic and tailored. Pair them with a basic tank or tee, chunky sweater or blouse on top and ankle boots, sneakers on the bottom. Literally any combination works! You guys already know I LOVE H&M denim, I think it fits really well, lasts and is a great price point. If this light denim wash isn’t for you these also come in a darker shade and white.
14. Wide Ultra High Waist Jeans ($29.99)
Long wide jeans are also a MUST this year! I’ve loved this style for so many years, but they were just nowhere to be found so I’m really excited about this trend being back. They are so chic and elevate pretty much any outfit. And if you work in a more casual office setting these are so useful! These are also available in black and a lighter blue denim.
15. Slim High Ankle Jeans ($19.99)
I know skinny jeans are “out”, but I don’t listen to the rules and I don’t intend to start now. Black skinny jeans are a must for me in the Fall because I love the look of knee high (or over the knee boots) paired with them! They are a classic and if you take a peek at my past Capsule Wardrobes you’ll see how many outfits you can truly make with them.
16. White Sneakers ($34.99)
I’m fairly certain all of you probably have white sneakers in your closet, but if you don’t or are looking for a new pair these chunky soled ones are a perfect addition. They go with everything and will keep even your casual outfits looking put together.
17. Knee High Boots ($69.99)
Sleek knee high boots are THE Fall shoe in my opinion and instantly elevate any look. You can pair them with dress pants, leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts…literally anything and look so polished. If you want a pair that’s a little better quality I love Vince Camuto, Naturalizer (they make wide-calf) & Marc Fisher.
18. Combat Boots ($34.99)
Combat boots are BACK (for guys and girls) and while a chunkier style is what’s really on trend right now I’m partial to a sleek style like this! They’re comfortable, durable, practical and look cute.
19. Gathered Ballet Flats ($14.99)
Another item you probably own already, but still needed to be included in my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe! Ballet flats are a classic and can dress up your casual outfits and keep your professional outfits looking put together while keeping you comfortable.
20. Heeled Ankle Boots ($49.99)
I’m a boots girl if you couldn’t tell and ankle booties are my go-to for pretty much any situation in the Fall and Winter. These square toe, faux leather boots are an updated version and the perfect height heel for an everyday look.
21. Knit Tank ($9.99)
H&M makes the BEST basics – tanks, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, plain sweatshirts, etc. I really like the neckline of this one and the color, cream, is a nice alternative for white for Fall.
22. Metal Hair Clip ($5.99)
Consider this jewelry for your hair that’s practical for keeping your hair out of your face, but also pretty!
23. Double Strand Necklace ($5.99)
I’m sure you’ve hopped on board the layered gold necklace train already, but just incase you haven’t this is a great necklace to pick up and literally not take off!
24. Black Quilted Shoulder Bag ($39.99)
I can easily see this quilted bag being a go-to all Fall and Holiday season. It’s a great size for daily use and sleek enough to go out with. It paired well with pretty much every single outfit I put together from the pieces of my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe.
25. Nylon Shoulder Bag ($24.99)
Sporty cross body bags are so in right now. I like that you can wear this one as a tradition cross body, but also shorten the strap and wear it across your chest or on your shoulder.
26. Canvas Tote Bag ($49.99)
No capsule wardrobe is complete without a tote bag, it’s an essential to every closet in my opinion. You may already have one, but if you’re looking for a new one I highly suggest this canvas shopper. It’s practical, thick and has outer and inner compartments to keep you organized.
48 Fall Outfits Ideas:
4 Trends That You Should Invest In This Season:
- COMBAT BOOTS – Not going to lie this trend was hard for me too, especially the super chunky style that’s super on-trend right now, but after accepting combat boots weren’t going anywhere anytime soon and finding a few pairs that I liked I’m on board. This particular pair here is sleeker and can be worn a variety of ways.
- CLAW CLIPS – This is one 90s trend that I am so happy is back. Honestly I never stopped wearing them, but I’m in love with all of the options available now. The gold one I included here can be dressed up or down and I’m also loving this pack I ordered on Amazon which are great if you have a lot of hair like me!
- PONCHOS – I’m not exactly sure if this is technically a “trend” this year, but I think a poncho (or a cape whatever you prefer to call them) is so classic and instantly elevates any outfit. Plus if you’re someone that’s always cold this is essentially like wearing a blanket, but chicer.
- QUILTED BAGS – Quilted bags have always been classic, but this updated version with a larger quilted pattern is so fun! I love the gold chain shoulder strap and the larger size, I can easily see this being my go to bag for everything this Fall and into the Holiday season. It’s always available in light beige with a silver chain.
