3 summers ago I published my first Capsule Wardrobe blog post and haven’t looked back since! Every season since I’ve put together an affordable capsule wardrobe to help you guys not only shop for the season, but also inspire you to get creative with what you may already have in your closet and pair together items you might not have thought to wear together.
It’s so easy to get caught up in new trends and buying “all the things” especially if you follow a lot of influencers on social media, but really adding a just a few new items to your closet each season and slowly building your ideal wardrobe (that you’re actually excited to wear) is what you should concentrate on!
That being said my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe consists of 25 items I think you should have in your closet, many of which you may already have, and why I think each of them is important, then I’m giving you 48 outfit ideas for how to pair these items together so hopefully you’re never stuck standing in front of your closet with “nothing to wear”!
We’re well into September and a temperature drop is on the horizon so it’s the perfect time to access your closet to see what you already have and what you’re lacking!
H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe Items:
1. Sweater Dress ($64.99)
Sweater dresses will never go out of style and this chunky ribbed style is so chic and wearable. It’s an elevated basic that I guarantee will be on constant rotation in your closet.
2. Patterned Shirt Dress ($57.99)
I am COMPLETELY obsessed with this subtle patterned dress! It’s bold and fun and exactly what my closet is missing. It’s extremely versatile and I’ve included a ton of different ways to style it here.
3. Rib Knit Dress ($37.99)
Instead of included a slip dress in this year’s H&M Fall capsule wardrobe I decided to go with a midi knit dress instead! This one can work for any number of occasions. Wear it with tights and boots on colder days, sneakers for a casual look, bare legs and flats when it’s warmer, the outfit combination possibilities are endless! And it can be layered under or over a number of tops.
4. Tie Belt Coat ($64.99)
Depending on where you live Fall may or may not be “coat”, but in NY it definitely is. I’m partial to a longer length coat in a neutral color, and this light beige one hits all the marks.
5. A-Line Jersey Skirt ($9.99)
Let me preface this by saying personally I’m not a mini skirt kinda girl, BUT short skirts are SO in style for Fall 2023 that I had to include one in this capsule wardrobe. This A-line skirt can be dressed it up with knee high boots and tights or dressed down with sneakers. And while it might not be my cup of tea, there are SO many possibilities with this skirt and it will transition well for every season.
6. Cotton Joggers ($17.99)
Loungewear isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and as the cold weather approaches I’m sure you’re going to be spending a lot more time indoors with comfy clothes on. Well no one said your comfy clothes couldn’t be cute! Beige joggers are the perfect thing to wear around the house, but also can be worn out with sneakers or boots and a sweater!
7. Corduroy Pants ($34.99)
Corduroy pants were one of my favorite fashion trends to make a resurgence last Fall and I’m happy to report they’re still “in” for this year! This dark moss green pair will be on heavy rotation is your closet if you draw inspiration from my capsule outfits below!
8. Vintage High Ankle Jeans ($39.99)
I know skinny jeans are “out”, but I don’t listen to the rules and I don’t intend to start now. These vintage style jeans are more of a straight style and a must for me in the Fall. They are a classic and if you take a peek at my past Capsule Wardrobes you’ll see how many outfits you can truly make with them.
9. Ankle Slacks ($19.99)
Dress pants are in, even if you don’t have an office to go to! Pair them with a crop top and fun sneakers for a casual look, a chunky sweater and boots for something in between, and dress them up with heels and a blouse for the office! I included a burgundy pair over black, but burgundy is the most quintessential Fall color and just as versatile as black!
10. Cotton Button Up ($24.99)
This button up is fitted with just a touch of slouchiness and the perfect addition to any closet!
11. Rib Knit Top ($24.99)
This H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe is primarily dark neutrals with is pretty out of character for me so I had to include one more colorful item and this green ribbed top was a perfect addition.
12. Oversized Wool Sweater (99.00)
I basically live in oversized sweaters during the colder months and this wool one with long wide sleeves is my pick this year!
13. Lace Trimmed Cami ($26.99)
This isn’t the first time this lace trimmed camisole has been featured in one of my capsule wardrobes and it won’t be the last. These tanks are so delicate and pretty and work with pretty much every other item in this capsule.
14. Printed T-Shirt ($14.99)
H&M makes the BEST basics – tanks, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, plain sweatshirts and of course that includes graphic tees! This Paris one is too cute and I love that it’s ivory instead of stark white which gives it a vintage vibe.
15. Jersey Long Sleeve Top ($7.99)
A white long sleeve t-shirt is essential in everyone’s Fall wardrobe (kids, adults, guys, girls, everyone!). It pairs perfect with sweats and jeans, but also works with a skirt for a more dressed up look. H&M’s basics are great for layering too, so if it gets really cold or you’re doing an outdoor activity you can layer this under a sweater for a non-bulky warm look.
16. Double Breasted Blazer ($62.99)
Truthfully I’ve never been a blazer girl, but my style has changed a little over the year and I’m ready to add a few to my closet. This double breasted one looks so chic and I love how oversized it is!
17. Knee High Boots ($74.99)
Sleek knee high boots are THE Fall shoe in my opinion and instantly elevate any look. You can pair them with dress pants, leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts…literally anything and look so polished. If you want a pair that’s a little better quality I love Vince Camuto, Naturalizer (they make wide-calf) & Marc Fisher.
18. Chelsea Boots with Heel ($49.99)
These ankle Chelsea books are the perfect shoe to pair with pretty much every outfit in the Fall capsule wardrobe! The color is super versatile and the block heel makes them super comfy.
19. Platform Heels ($64.99)
I’m so incredibly obsessed with these platform heels that they were the first thing I saved for this capsule wardrobe when I started browsing. I will forever be a platform lover and these will truly elevate (literally and figuratively) any outfit.
20. Canvas Snakeskin Sneakers ($29.99)
I ALWAYS include a pair of white sneakers in my capsule wardrobes, but this time I’m switching it up and including this snakeskin pair! This capsule wardrobe is more neutral then in years past so I thought these sneakers were a fun pop of print to add to your outfit. They go with everything and will keep even your casual outfits looking put together.
21. Fringe Trimmed Poncho ($32.99)
I mentioned above that Autumn doesn’t always equal coat weather so this woven poncho is perfect if you live in a warmer climate. Plus I will always love a boho vibe for Fall and this delivers.
22. Chunky Necklace ($29.99)
One of the biggest 2023 trends (& one of the easiest for you to try) is bold chunky jewelry and this necklace is a great and affordable way to add the trend to your closet. It’s so chic and way more versatile than I could’ve ever imagined. I love a statement piece of jewelry so I’m so excited for this trend!
23. Hoop Earrings ($9.99)
A classic gold hoop earring should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe and this under $10 is a great purchase if you don’t already own a pair!
24. Crossbody Bucket Bag ($29.99)
H&M really stepped up their accessory and bag game this Fall! This bucket style crossbody bag is literally perfect! The size is great for everyday and you can detach the crossbody strap for more of a sleek night look! And the color is gorgeous!
25. Crossbody Bag ($24.99)
I’m almost in disbelief that this bag is from H&M because I swear it looks designer! The gold hardware is so chic and this bag in general is just perfect!
48 Fall Outfits Ideas:
3 Trends That You Should Invest In This Season:
- PLATFORMS – I could not be more excited about the fact that 70s platforms are making a comeback because truly I never stopped wearing them. Sure they’re tall, but they are SO much more comfortable to wear then regular heels! The pair I included here I’m in LOVE with, but these are my absolute favorite, I’ve had them for over a year and I can literally walk a marathon in them.
- CHUNKY JEWERLY – Chunky statement jewelry is one of 2023s biggest trends and I’m SO here for it. Don’t get me wrong I love minimal jewelry (I just love all jewelry), but something about a chunky necklace or bracelets or large statement earrings with a layered outfit is just super chic!
- CORDUROY – While corduroy isn’t necessarily a trend, it’s a seasonal fabric and a great alternative to wearing jeans. As someone who wears a lot of denim during the Fall and Winter I love having an alternative pair of pants to switch it up with.
