2 summers ago I published my first Capsule Wardrobe blog post and haven’t looked back since! Every season since I’ve put together an affordable capsule wardrobe to help you guys not only shop for the season, but also inspire you to get creative with what you may already have in your closet and pair together items you might not have thought to wear together.

It’s so easy to get caught up in new trends and buying “all the things” especially if you follow a lot of influencers on social media, but really adding a just a few new items to your closet each season and slowly building your ideal wardrobe (that you’re actually excited to wear) is what you should concentrate on!
That being said my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe consists of 25 items I think you should have in your closet, many of which you may already have, and why I think each of them is important, then I’m giving you 48 outfit ideas for how to pair these items together so hopefully you’re never stuck standing in front of your closet with “nothing to wear”!
We’re well into September and the temperatures are finally starting to drop a little bit in New York so it’s the perfect time to access your closet to see what you already have and what you’re lacking!
H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe Items:
1. Puff Sleeved Polka Dot Dress ($39.99)
If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I’m ALL for dresses with slits and this polka dot midi dress with high slit is hitting all the marks for me! The subtle print is a fun alternative to basic black and it can be dressed up or down.
2. Oversized Patterned Dress ($64.99)
I am COMPLETELY obsessed with this oversized patterned dress! It’s bold and fun and exactly what my closet is missing. While it’s a pretty loud piece it’s extremely versatile and I’ve included a ton of different ways to style it here.
3. Short Satin Dress ($34.99)
A shorter, flirty dress is a must during Fall for me. This satin one is work appropriate for all seasons, but also can work for any number of occasions. Wear it with tights and boots on colder days, sneakers for a casual look, bare legs and flats when it’s warmer, the outfit combination possibilities are endless!
4. Leopard Midi Skirt ($24.99)
I’m OBSESSED with this skirt! The silhouette, the leopard print, the slit. Literally everything! Dress it up with knee high boots or ankle booties, dress it down with sneakers. There are SO many possibilities with this skirt and it will transition well for every season.
5. Leopard Flared Skirt ($29.99)
It may seem crazy that I included 2 leopard print skirts in a capsule wardrobe, but they’re both so different. Leopard is 100% a neutral in my book and this skirt would be on heavy rotation in my closet.
6. Black Joggers ($24.99)
Loungewear isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and as the cold weather approaches I’m sure you’re going to be spending a lot more time indoors with comfy clothes on. Well no one said your comfy clothes couldn’t be cute! Black joggers are the perfect thing to wear around the house, but also can be worn out with sneakers or boots and a sweater!
7. Black Leggings ($9.99)
Black leggings are a staple in my year round wardrobe, but especially in the Fall. Leggings, boots and a sweater are an instant outfit whenever I don’t know what to wear.
8. Slim High Jeans ($49.99)
I know skinny jeans are “out”, but I don’t listen to the rules and I don’t intend to start now. Slim jeans are a must for me in the Fall because I love the look of knee high (or over the knee boots) paired with them! They are a classic and if you take a peek at my past Capsule Wardrobes you’ll see how many outfits you can truly make with them.
9. Dress Pants ($29.99)
Dress pants are in, even if you don’t have an office to go to! Pair them with a crop top and fun sneakers for a casual look, a chunky sweater and boots for something in between, and dress them up with heels and a blouse for the office! (If you’re feeling daring, these also come in hot pink)
10. Oversized Blouse ($24.99)
This oversized blouse is kind of a wild card item for me to include. Normally I would include an oversized sweater in a Fall Capsule Wardrobe, but this blouse is a fun alternative.
11. Striped Sweater ($12.99)
This cozy Striped Sweater is so fun, but just as versatile as a solid color sweater. I love the thick stripes and that it’s a neutral.
12. Pink Knit Sweater (19.99)
This Fall Capsule Wardrobe is primarily black which is really out character for me so I had to include one bright colored sweater and this hot pink one didn’t disappoint.
13. Cotton Tank ($7.99)
H&M makes the BEST basics – tanks, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, plain sweatshirts, etc. This cotton tank will be your base for a ton of outfits this season.
14. Ribbed Top ($14.99)
The puff sleeves sold me on this one, this can be worn with pretty much every bottom I included in this capsule!
15. Cotton T-Shirt ($5.99)
A black t-shirt is essential in everyone’s Fall wardrobe (kids, adults, guys, girls, everyone!). It pairs perfect with sweats and jeans, but also works with a skirt for a more dressed up look. H&M’s basics are great for layering too, so if it gets really cold or you’re doing an outdoor activity you can layer this under a sweater for a non-bulky warm look.
16. Biker Jacket ($64.99)
A biker jacket or moto jacket is probably something you already have in your closet, but a must for me in the Fall. In the Spring & Summer I tend to grab a denim jacket to wear over things, and in the Fall I always go for (faux) leather.
17. Knee High Boots ($74.99)
Sleek knee high boots are THE Fall shoe in my opinion and instantly elevate any look. You can pair them with dress pants, leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts…literally anything and look so polished. If you want a pair that’s a little better quality I love Vince Camuto, Naturalizer (they make wide-calf) & Marc Fisher.
18. Combat Boots ($34.99)
Combat boots are BACK (for guys and girls) and while a chunkier style is what’s really on trend right now I’m partial to a sleek style like this! They’re comfortable, durable, practical and look cute.
19. Faux Suede Slingbacks ($29.99)
I love suede for Fall and these slingback pumps are a fun alternative to a regular heel!
20. Cream Sneakers ($34.99)
I ALWAYS include a pair of white sneakers in my capsule wardrobes, but this time I’m switching it up and including this cream pair! I think they’re a little more elevated and I love the warmth they bring for Fall instead of a stark white. They go with everything and will keep even your casual outfits looking put together.
21. Wool Coat ($219.99)
Depending on where you live Fall may or may not be “coat”, but in NY it definitely is. I’m partial to a longer length coat in a neutral (but not too neutral) color, and this olive one was calling my name. It’s is on the pricier side, but I believe a coat is an investment, if you’re looking for something a little less expensive check out this, this and this!
22. Metal Hair Claw ($9.99)
Consider this jewelry for your hair that’s practical for keeping your hair out of your face, but also pretty!
23. Chunky Gold Earrings ($12.99)
More layers for Fall mean chunkier jewelry to stand out against it! These earrings stand out, but aren’t too much.
24. Black Quilted Shoulder Bag ($39.99)
I can easily see this quilted bag being a go-to all Fall and Holiday season. It’s a great size for daily use and sleek enough to go out with. It paired well with pretty much every single outfit I put together from the pieces of my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe. (Also available in beige)
25. Shopping Bag ($29.99)
No capsule wardrobe is complete without a tote shopping bag, it’s an essential to every closet in my opinion. You may already have one, but if you’re looking for a new one I highly suggest this faux leather one. It’s perfect for work and play.
48 Fall Outfits Ideas:

4 Trends That You Should Invest In This Season:
- COMBAT BOOTS – Not going to lie this trend was hard for me too, especially the super chunky style that’s super on-trend right now, but after accepting combat boots weren’t going anywhere anytime soon and finding a few pairs that I liked I’m on board. This particular pair here is sleeker and can be worn a variety of ways.
- CLAW CLIPS – This is one 90s trend that I am so happy is back. Honestly I never stopped wearing them, but I’m in love with all of the options available now. The gold one I included here can be dressed up or down and I’m also loving this pack I ordered on Amazon which are great if you have a lot of hair like me!
- ANIMAL PRINT – While I don’t really consider this a “trend” because in my opinion animal prints are a neutral and always in style, they are definitely having a come back and I couldn’t be happier! I included THREE (2 leopard prints and 1 zebra) here and included SO many ways to wear them.
- QUILTED BAGS – Quilted bags have always been classic, but this updated slouchy version is so fun! I love the gold chain shoulder strap and the larger size, I can easily see this being my go to bag for everything this Fall and into the Holiday season. And I love that it seems more casual that versions of past years so you can truly wear it with any outfit.
