4 summers ago I published my first Capsule Wardrobe blog post and haven’t looked back since! Every season since I’ve put together an affordable capsule wardrobe to help you guys not only shop for the season, but also inspire you to get creative with what you may already have in your closet and pair together items you might not have thought to wear together.
It’s so easy to get caught up in new trends and buying “all the things” especially if you follow a lot of influencers on social media, but really adding a just a few new items to your closet each season and slowly building your ideal wardrobe (that you’re actually excited to wear) is what you should concentrate on!
That being said my H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe consists of 25 items I think you should have in your closet, many of which you may already have, and why I think each of them is important, then I’m giving you 48 outfit ideas for how to pair these items together so hopefully you’re never stuck standing in front of your closet with “nothing to wear”!
We’re well into September and a temperature drop is on the horizon so it’s the perfect time to access your closet to see what you already have and what you’re lacking!
H&M Fall Capsule Wardrobe Items:
1. Sweater Dress ($39.99)
Sweater dresses will never go out of style and this oversize knit style is so chic and wearable. It’s an elevated basic that I guarantee will be on constant rotation in your closet.
2. Belted One Shoulder Dress ($49.99)
I am COMPLETELY obsessed with this chic one shoulder dress! It’s basic, but elevated and such a statement silhouette. It’s extremely versatile and I’ve included a ton of different ways to style it here.
3. Jacquard Weave Tie Back Dress ($59.99)
This flared skirt short dress is a little bit of a wild card addition to this Fall capsule wardrobe, but it was too good not to include! This one can work for any number of occasions. Wear it with tights and boots on colder days, sneakers for a casual look, bare legs and flats when it’s warmer, the outfit combination possibilities are endless!
4. Leopard Midi Skirt ($24.99)
If you follow me on Instagram then you know I posted recently about how I wasn’t sure how I felt about the midi slip skirt trend, but I’ve definitely warmed up to it! I’d styled mine with boots, sneakers, flats and heels and the styling options are endless!
5. A-Line Skirt ($17.99)
Let me preface this by saying personally I’m not a mini skirt kinda girl, BUT short skirts are in again for Fall and I had to include one in this capsule wardrobe. This A-line skirt can be dressed it up with knee high boots and tights or dressed down with sneakers. And while it might not be my cup of tea, there are SO many possibilities with this skirt and it will transition well for every season.
6. High Waist Joggers ($24.99)
Loungewear isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and as the cold weather approaches I’m sure you’re going to be spending a lot more time indoors with comfy clothes on. Well no one said your comfy clothes couldn’t be cute! Dark red joggers are the perfect thing to wear around the house, but also can be worn out with sneakers or boots and a sweater!
7. Corduroy Pants ($34.99)
Corduroy pants were one of my favorite fashion trends to make a resurgence last Fall and I’m happy to report they’re still “in” for this year! This black pair will be on heavy rotation is your closet if you draw inspiration from my capsule outfits below!
8. Wide Cut Jeans ($39.99)
Wide cut jeans have completely stolen my heart and I truly find myself grabbing for this style over any other style of jeans in my closet. If you haven’t added a pair to your wardrobe yet, let this be your sign to!
9. Wide Leg Belted Pants ($34.99)
Dress pants are in, even if you don’t have an office to go to! Pair them with a crop top and fun sneakers for a casual look, a chunky sweater and boots for something in between, and dress them up with heels and a blouse for the office! I included a cream pair over black because they are just so elevated and chic and will hopefully take you out of your comfort zone a bit!
10. Cable Knit Cardigan ($34.99)
This dark green khaki color was almost reason enough for me to include this cardigan in my capsule wardrobe, but the thick cable knit style and gold buttons truly sealed the deal. It is literally the perfect Fall sweater.
11. Flounced Chiffon Blouse ($19.99)
Everyone needs at least one pretty chiffon blouse in their closet and this long sleeve one is absolutely perfect!
12. Rib Knit Sweater (24.99)
I basically live in oversized sweaters during the colder months and this striped one is my pick this year!
13. Lace Trimmed Cami ($19.99)
This isn’t the first time this lace trimmed camisole has been featured in one of my capsule wardrobes and it won’t be the last. These tanks are so delicate and pretty and work with pretty much every other item in this capsule.
14. Long Sleeve Jersey Top ($9.99)
A cream long sleeve t-shirt is essential in everyone’s Fall wardrobe (kids, adults, guys, girls, everyone!). It pairs perfect with sweats and jeans, but also works with a skirt for a more dressed up look. H&M’s basics are great for layering too, so if it gets really cold or you’re doing an outdoor activity you can layer this under a sweater for a non-bulky warm look.
15. Printed Sweatshirt ($24.99)
H&M makes the BEST basics – tanks, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and of course that includes sweatshirts! This Paris one is too cute and I love the font!
16. Double Breasted Blazer ($34.99)
Truthfully I’ve never been a blazer girl, but my style has changed a little over the year and I’m ready to add a few to my closet. This double breasted one looks so chic and I love how oversized it is!
17. Knee High Leather Boots ($169.99)
Sleek knee high boots are THE Fall shoe in my opinion and instantly elevate any look. You can pair them with dress pants, leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts…literally anything and look so polished. If you want a pair that’s a little better quality I love Vince Camuto, Naturalizer (they make wide-calf) & Marc Fisher.
18. Mary Jane Flats ($74.99)
Mary janes are THE “it” shoe for Fall and I can’t recommend adding a pair to your closet enough! I didn’t think I’d get much use out of them, but I’ve been wearing them constantly!
19. Slingback Pumps ($34.99)
Who doesn’t love a slingback pump? I feel like we didn’t see too many pairs of them for a while and I’m loving that they’re making a comeback.
20. Sneakers ($34.99)
I ALWAYS include a pair of sneakers in my capsule wardrobes and this season is no different. They go with everything and will keep even your casual outfits looking put together.
21. Tie Belt Coat ($64.99)
Depending on where you live Fall may or may not be “coat”, but in NY it definitely is. I’m partial to a longer length coat in a neutral color, and this dark beige one hits all the marks.
22. Short Necklace ($49.99)
One of the biggest 2023 trends (& one of the easiest for you to try) is bold chunky jewelry and this necklace is a great and affordable way to add the trend to your closet. It’s so chic and way more versatile than I could’ve ever imagined. I love a statement piece of jewelry so I’m so excited for this trend!
23. Chunky Earrings ($8.99)
If you don’t have a pair of these tear drop style gold earrings in your closet yet, do yourself a favor and get them! I wear mine constantly and they instantly elevate a look.
24. Quilted Shoulder Bag ($39.99)
H&M really stepped up their accessory and bag game this Fall! This shoulder bag is literally perfect! The size is great for everyday and the color is gorgeous!
25. Shoulder Bag ($34.99)
I’m almost in disbelief that this bag is from H&M because I swear it looks designer! The gold hardware is so chic and this bag in general is just perfect!
48 Fall Outfits Ideas:
3 Trends That You Should Invest In This Season:
- PLATFORMS – I could not be more excited about the fact that 70s platforms are making a comeback because truly I never stopped wearing them. Sure they’re tall, but they are SO much more comfortable to wear then regular heels! The pair I included here I’m in LOVE with, but these are my absolute favorite, I’ve had them for over a year and I can literally walk a marathon in them.
- CHUNKY JEWERLY – Chunky statement jewelry is one of 2024s biggest trends and I’m SO here for it. Don’t get me wrong I love minimal jewelry (I just love all jewelry), but something about a chunky necklace or bracelets or large statement earrings with a layered outfit is just super chic!
- CORDUROY – While corduroy isn’t necessarily a trend, it’s a seasonal fabric and a great alternative to wearing jeans. As someone who wears a lot of denim during the Fall and Winter I love having an alternative pair of pants to switch it up with.
